Covid Secure Spot Checks | Essential Safety Guidance for Businesses

covid secure spot checksTo minimise the risk of infection in the workplace, the HSE are carrying out Covid Secure spot checks and inspections on businesses to ensure they are compliant. They are doing this by calling, visiting and inspecting all types of businesses, in all areas, to check the measures they’ve put in place are in line with the current guidance.

Where businesses are not managing this, the HSE will take immediate action in one of the following ways:

  • Providing specific advice.
  • Stopping certain work practices until they are made safe.
  • Issuing enforcement notices.
  • Prosecution where a business fails to comply.

Covid Secure Spot Checks & What you Need to Know

When the HSE visit your premises, it’s essential you know what they will be looking for in relation to COVID-19. These measures include:

  • Do you have a Covid Risk Assessment in Place?
  • Are employees aware of the Covid Secure measures?
  • Is the company aware of RIDDOR requirements and is the company monitoring employees/visitors for symptoms?
  • Ventilation – How is this managed?
  • Is the Test and Trace system compliant?

Social Distancing Measures – Employees & Volunteers

Do you have the correct social distancing measures in place in your business or premises? The HSE will be looking for the following measures as part of a Covid Secure spot check:

  • Can 2m separation be maintained?
  • If no can 1m plus be maintained?
  • What mitigating factors in place?
  • Screens between work areas?
  • Back to back/ side to side working?
  • Staggered arrival/departure times?
  • Fixed teams/partnering?
  • Home working where possible?
  • Are face coverings available to employees if requested?
  • Are visors and face coverings worn for all close contact work?
  • Is signage in place reminding the public to wear face coverings?
  • Is there a COVID secure poster and/or other signage at the entrance to the premises?
  • Hand washing facilities and sanitiser readily available?
  • Cleaning materials readily available and contact points cleaned frequently?

Social Distancing Measures – Public & Visitors

How are you managing social distancing measures for members of the public and visitors to your business or premises?

  • Can 2m separation be maintained?
  • If not, can 1m plus be maintained?
  • What mitigating factors in place?
  • Screens between seating?
  • Back to back/ side to side working?
  • Controls in place for queuing?
  • Keeping traffic routes clear?
