Accidents happen, it's inevitable. But it's how you prepare, protect, and handle those accidents that makes the difference for your staff and business.
Each year workers are killed or injured at work and millions of working days are lost. No matter how meticulous you have been with your health and safety policies and procedures, accidents can still occur. It can be a very stressful situation all round, obviously there’s the unfortunate individual that needs attention after an injury, or worse.
It’s also easy to overlook the emotional toll on business owners and managers of personnel at the time of incident. Suddenly you’re thrust into an investigation, perhaps with Police involved, where you have to make sure you have concise answers, paperwork and compliance in order.
Some common questions surrounding accidents at work include:
- Is the accident RIDDOR reportable?
- Does every accident need to be investigated and how do I carry out an investigation?
- Am I at fault and do I need to inform my Employer’s Liability Insurance?
- What do I do now after I have carried out my investigation?
RIDDOR stands for the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013. Under these regulations there are specific injuries that will be required to be reported to the HSE and for employees who have been off work for more than 7 consecutive days not counting the day of the accident.
You must also ensure that you record the accident in your accident book regardless how minor it is. The records in the accident book may highlight a significant trend in certain accidents, which would then require you to take action.
